Williams set for some tough decisions in the middle of the season when he was forced to pull back on two key defensive linemen during preseason.

In a surprise move the Raiders opted to keep one of their starting defensive linemen on the bench with rookie defensive tackle Shilique Calhoun on injured reserve. The result was a solid showing from Calhoun as he recorded 15 tackles, two sacks and three tackles for loss, one sack for a loss of 3.5 yards and four pass breakups.


Calhoun has recorded 11.5 sacks this season in limited playing time, good for second on the team behind left tackle Dan Williams.

Site decision looms for townsville technical college after funding shortfall

An Australian university is threatening to close the school in Townsville after a funding shortfall.

As a result, technical colleges will be closing across the country.

The Townsville Technical College has about 60 full-time faculty and is one of only five Technical Schools in Western Australia, but will not be able to sustain the services for the next few years, vice-president Nick Biering says.

The College was awarded $7 million in 2009, but only made a small contribution towards its operations.

The college is the only primary and secondary school in Western Australia for women, yet only three per cent of the population at the time had attended.

Mr Biering says while only half of schools in the region are for women, women have made significant changes to technology and entrepreneurship since being introduced to it in 2005.

"There was no need for us to have another one of those schools just because we felt it was not a real high-demand service that was needed," he said.

"We actually ended up closing down our two other schools because we were not meeting those requirements.

"We had to have something a little bit different, and that was a little bit different for women in terms of what they were able to achieve with the technology available."

The college is seeking funding for an online training program for students.

"The goal of the program is to empower women to learn and to become leaders in technology," Mr Biering said.

"We need to be a resource to the education system, to be a resource to female-headed businesses to enable them to stay."
